Masklin is the leader of depleted tribe of 4 inch tall Nomes. He and the remainder of their tribe now live next to a road and search for food at the bins of the nearby café. Masklin decides to save the remaining Nomes by climbing on a truck to find a new home. With them, they bring their heirloom, the ‘Thing’. The end up at the department store of Arnold Bros (est. 1905) and inside they find thousands of Nomes. However, the inside Nomes have forgotten their origins and are living happily under the floors of a department store full of goods and huge, stupid humans, all created for them by their god, Arnold Bros (est. 1905). The store Nomes are grouped in tribes like the Stationeri, the Haberdasheri, Ironmongeri etc. Peace reigns but then there are Signs—"Final Reductions," and "Everything Must Go"— something is very wrong. Then Masklin and his tribe, appears from the mythical Outside bearing the Thing, a small black box that mysteriously lights up and announces that the store will be destroyed in less than a month. After much debate, Masklin decides to steal a truck. He asks the ingenious inventor Dorcas del Icatessen to form a steering committee!
