Tanner Hughes is a former US soldier in the Army’s Delta Force and he was raised by his grandparents. He became an Army Ranger in his grandfather’s military footsteps. Tanner has spent most of his life abroad and as the book says, he is a proverbial rolling stone. He has no desire to settle down yet and is happiest when he is deployed to a new area.
Tenner is a handsome, muscled man with high cheek bones, a chiselled jawline. He has a tanned complexion and hazel eyes with long eye lashes. Tanner goes to Pensacola, Florida to see to his dying grandmother. Her last words to him is the name of the father he never knew and where to find him.
Tenner’s next deployment is security for USAID and decides to go to Asheboro, North Carolina for a few weeks to see if can find any information regarding his father. Tenner is driving a red reproduction of the 1968 Shelby GT500. In a parking lot at a bar, a teenage girl named Casey backs her SUV into Tenner’s car. He is unhurt but his car is damaged and will need repairs. He then drives her barely damaged SUV back to Casey’s mom’s house.
Kaitlyn Cooper meets them at the house when they arrive. She is a doctor and single mother and she and Tanner have an immediate connection. However, she cannot lose her head over him as he is due to leave in a few weeks.
Jasper is an 83 year old man living in a small cabin on the edge of a forest alone with his dog “Arlo”. Jasper lost his business, his home and his family years ago in a horrific tragedy that left him covered in scars. Jasper whittle small animal figurines for Caitlin’s son and wonders why God has forsaken him, similarly to Job in the bible. Jasper hears the a legendary white deer has been spotted in the forest and he becomes obsessed with saving it from poachers and a particular rich man’s sons.
Tanner is caught between Jasper, Kaitlyn and returning to duty as the story unfolds.
